In honor of our last Friday the 13th of the year being in October I was inspired to share my top 10 favorite horrorish movies. I would love to hear yours.
Classic: The Exorcist (1973)
Ratings:
IMDB: 8.1
Rotten Tomatoes: 78%
Highlights:
360 head turning, crucifix masturbation, green projectile vomit, spider walking down stairs (a restored deleted scene), and a sexy priest. This was inspired by a true exorcism story.
Gore: Hostel (2005)
Ratings:
IMDB: 5.9
Rotten Tomatoes: 59%
Haters!
Highlights:
Where do I begin?! Paying for torture, Achilles tendon slicing, eye ball obliteration puss eruption, skull smashing, Female villains, limb amputation, hot AF Jay Hernandez and Eli Roth. I’m obsessed with Roth’s horrific mind. Everything he touches is gold. He’s my real life Horror Hero. I watched this movie sitting next to him when he hosted a screening on Halloween in 2014 at the Beverly Cinema. Best night of my life.
Slasher: Scream (1996)
Ratings:
IMDB: 7.4
Rotten Tomatoes: 81%
Highlights:
Prank calling, horror trivia, death by garage door, scream queen, adultery, two killers! Wes Craven, the cast, the humor oye! Released right before Christmas and it killed being one of the highest grossing films in 1996 at 173 million worldwide. This was filmed all over my home county of Sonoma.
Psychological Thriller: Seven (1996)
Ratings:
IMDB: 8.6
Rotten Tomatoes: 83%
Highlights:
Graphic, disturbing, clever work of art. Genius serial killer murdering representations of those committing the seven deadly sins. Superb cast. This movie stays with you even after the credits roll. “What’s in the box?!” Fuck around and find out.
PG Fantasy/ Musical: Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Ratings:
IMDB: 7.9
Rotten Tomatoes: 95%
Highlights:
Tim Burton need I say more?! A love story, an identify crisis, merging of the two best holidays, humor, Oogie Boogie Man, and that soundtrack is catchy. The most nostalgic movie on my list.
Fantasy: Gretel & Hansel (2020)
Ratings:
IMDB: 5.5
Rotten Tomatoes: 63%
Highlights:
Witchy things, magic mushrooms, binge eating, gaslighting children and eating them. Not a fan of kids, so I’m definitely biased.
Horror/Comedy: Fresh (2022)
Ratings:
IMDB: 6.7
Rotten Tomatoes: 81%
Highlights:
Dating app culture meets refined cannibalism. A true love story. Sebastian Stan nailed the role of the charming, charismatic, trustworthy, not too sexy lead. Butchering human flesh while dancing to Obsession is a vibe I strive to achieve in a pescatarian world. The opening date scene is all too real. I don’t blame Noa for falling for a cotton candy grape line.
Creature: Jeepers/ Creepers (2001)
Ratings:
IMDB: 6.2
Rotten Tomatoes: 45%
Lame!
Highlights:
The brother and sister relationship is developed so authentically. I believe Justin Long and Gina Philips are actually related. A demon creature becomes what it eats, only feeding every 23 years. The Jeepers Creepers song is a lead of its own. Translating personalized license plates has never been more foreboding.
Indie: Granny (1999)
Not rated
Highlights
“She’ll love you to pieces.” This movie is a terrible masterpiece. It’s hilarious and mind numbing, you have to watch it. I don’t want to give anything away.
Dutch Indy: The Human Centipede (2009)
Ratings:
IMDB: 4.4
Rotten Tomatoes: 48%
I get it.
Highlights:
Mouth to ass. Feedings…you get it.
Favorite Horror Character: Jason Voorhees Friday the 13th (1980)
He’s a misunderstood, introverted mamas boy. He hunts the immoral, so maybe he’s doing the Lord’s work? His birthday is June 13th 1946, and his home base is a lake, a true Cancer. They are emotional train wrecks, but a fellow water sign to my Pisces. He’s the only villain that pulls at my heartstrings, and he has his own Holiday (it’s a holiday to me every Friday the 13th)! Michael shares Halloween that doesn’t count.
